Grown On The Farm. Produced On The Farm. Craft-Made Boutique Wine.
The ancient laterite soils, warm days and cool evenings of Denmark, on the south coast of Western Australia, provides the perfect environment for developing the intense characters shown in our premium wines.
In 1963 Peter Buxton moved from Victoria to Western Australia and became the proud owner of a 405 acre bush block at the end of a dirt track between Denmark and Albany.
Peter was joined by Peggy and they began the hard work of turning a dream of their own farm into reality. The farm started with cattle and has diversified to include sheep, wildflowers and, of course, over 13 hectares of vines. Cattle and sheep are sold locally in Mount Barker and Katanning while the wildflowers are exported overseas.
The winery started when Peter realised the great potential for the laterite soils and Denmark’s Mediterranean climate to produce full-flavoured grapes. From the very beginning Yilgarnia Wines has been a family business. Son Anthony was involved in the early planning and cultivation of the vineyards. Today Anthony is the Chief Winemaker responsible for the management and work activities associated within the vineyards and winery. Daughters Sally and Holly are also involved in the business: Sally with administration and Holly with marketing. Daughter-in-Law Yoko runs Yoko’s Kitchen at the Cellar Door.
Success has followed. Starting in 2008, Yilgarnia Wines has won over 50 awards in Wine Competitions across Australia and Singapore. We feel sure you will award us a “Cheers!” when you taste our great wines.
