Nyoongar people referr to the Walpole area as Nor-Nor-Nup, the place of the norne, or black snake,
Nornalup is a popular holiday and recreational area on the eastern bank of the Frankland River, which is the western boundary of the Denmark Shire.
Surrounded by national parks, nature reserves, and the Nornalup Inlet, this is a popular area for boating and kayaking, fishing, and bush walking.
Nornalup was settled in 1930, at around the same time as the railway line reached this area. It was developed as an area for holiday cottages as well as the farm settlement scheme, which was developed over much of the Denmark area. The first settlers lived in makeshift camps while they cleared land and built homes and farms.
There is a restaurant at Nornalup, however the town is serviced by Walpole which is only 10km away.
